The paper presents the results of the study of the briquetting process for a charge consisting of 90% converter sludge and 10% coke dust by hydraulic pressing using the following binders: sodium silicate powder hydrated, polyvinyl alcohol, 50% molasses solution, corn starch, Floform 9309S, corn modified “cold swelling” starches – Gletel BW и Gletogel B, PSV-M, TD 000.000.SV and TD 000.127.SV. Drying was carried out at a temperature of 400 °C for 120 minutes, followed by settling the briquettes in the open air at room temperature for 72 hours, measuring the compressive strength and dropping after 72 hours. Determination of compression strength of briquettes was carried out according to the procedure GOST 24765–81 on a hydraulic small-sized press PGM-100MG4. The briquette drop strength was determined according to the procedure GOST 25471–82 by three times dropping briquettes on a steel plate from two meters and subsequent screening on a 5 mm screen with determination of class output. Studies have shown that the best strength characteristics of briquettes are achieved by using a Gletogel B binder at a dosage of 1%, as well as a hydrated sodium silicate powder at dosages of 1.25% and 2.5%, ensuring the achievement of target values both in compressive strength and in shedding strength. This will allow using briquettes in various iron and steel processes, thereby reducing the technological burden on the environment, preserving primary natural resources, and expanding the raw material base of the enterprise.
