Abstract

The article presents an analytical review of the key areas of development of the technology for the production of third-generation automotive sheet steel (AHSS), focused on the advanced classes of steels: Q&P (hardening and distribution), TBF (bainite-ferrite) and Nanosteel (nanostructured). The evolutionary transition from an intensive alloying strategy (characteristic of second generation steels such as TWIP) to precision microstructure control through complex thermomechanical processing modes is shown. Particular attention is paid to the principles that provide an outstanding strength and ductility complex in Q&P and TBF steels. These include the formation of a multiphase structure with a controlled proportion of stable residual austenite, as well as the use of strain hardening mechanisms (TRIP-, MBIP-effects). These technologies enable strengths of 1000–2100 MPa to be achieved with significant ductility (total elongation of up to 20–30%), opening up opportunities for cold stamping of complex parts while simultaneously reducing body weight and improving passive safety. Modern approaches to the classification of third-generation AHSS steels and target formability indicators are considered. Using PAO Severstal as an example, the experience and challenges of mastering the mass production of a wide range of modern automotive sheet steels in Russia (IF, DP, CP, and HSS grades, including galvanized counterparts) are analyzed. The potential of nanostructured steels for dramatic improvement of properties was noted. It is concluded that further progress in this area requires the integration of fundamental metal research, accurate control of technological processes and a deep understanding of the needs of the automotive industry.
