Abstract

Quality control of steel castings in foundry production is carried out on the basis of existing international and national standards prescribing test methods and requirements for samples to determine mechanical properties and metallographic examination. Depending on the requirements agreed between the customer and the manufacturer, testing can be carried out both on separately poured samples (or cast samples) and on samples taken directly from the casting body. In the case of studying separately poured samples (or cast samples) and comparing them with the results of studying samples from the casting body, the obtained results of macro and microstructure, grain size and, as a consequence, the results of mechanical properties differ due to different crystallization conditions of the sample and casting. Using the example of a “bucket tooth” casting made of 110G13L steel, produced in the conditions of the steel foundry shop of Metallist JSC in Kachkanar, the reasons for the differences in the mechanical properties of a cast sample and samples taken from different places of the casting body are described. It has been established that the differences revealed during the study are due to different conditions of metal crystallization and should be taken into account when coordinating technical requirements for the product. The choice of location and shape of the casting sample should be made by a qualified technologist in such a way as to obtain the results of structural analysis and mechanical tests that give an idea of the properties of the metal in the body of the casting. It was noted that there are no unified industry standards in force regulating the assessment of the state of grain boundaries in steel, which is important from the point of view of control to ensure high performance characteristics of castings made of 110G13L steel.
